Sefton RUFC

Storm Bert was at full force trying to prevent any games taking place on Saturday. Fortunately, a determined Chris McCleary and Matty Thomas worked wonders to clear water off the pitches, so the two games could go ahead.

- The Game -

Widnes defended valiantly in the first fifteen minutes, preventing Sefton getting over the try line, despite Sefton camping out in their half. The chance for Sefton came when Tom Rainer stole the opposition’s ball at the lineout. A break by JP Ellis takes the ball to the line, and at the ruck Gorgeous picks up and goes blind with no resistance, to score.

Sefton immediately attack their line again, and would have been over if not for the ball being spilled over the line. Firstly by Steve Kidd, and then by Johnny Orr. Despite this, Sefton kept Widnes trapped in their half. At a lineout, a maul is set up, and driven within five metres of the line, before being passed out to the backs. Johnny Orr comes into the line, and is able to go through under the posts, this time managing to keep hold of the ball. Converted by Gorgeous.

Some great interplay in the backs allows Sefton to get into Widnes' twenty-two, and from a five metre scrum JP Ellis breaks from the back to go over. Gorgeous converts.

Two superb pod carries by the forwards set the platform for the backs to attack. As it goes out, Steve Kidd runs the perfect line to go through under the posts. Converted by Gorgeous.

The second half started with some kick tennis, with each team kicking back and forth to each other, trying to gain territory. The ball is eventually brought under control with a superb catch by Mark Dobie. The veteran player takes the ball forward, and into contact with confidence, and then drops the ball.

You can guarantee there is going to be a few scuffles when playing Widnes, especially with Tom Rainey and Liam Brown on the pitch. This time it was Tom Rainey in the middle of it all, as the first disagreement manifested. After a lot of pushing, the game finally continues.

A scrum on Widnes' twenty-two set the backs up nicely for the next try, with Steve Kidd again receiving the ball. Despite having a two man overlap outside him, he decides to go it alone. Luckily, on this occasion he managed to beat the defender and go over for his second try. Converted by Gorgeous.

From the restart Charlie Renshaw catches the ball and takes it up, before it goes out to the backs. Liam Brown recieves it, and proceeds to weave his way through half the opposition,  expecting him to be stopped at any moment. However  he just keeps going all the way to the Widnes posts. Gorgeous converts.

A scrum again allows the backs to break the defensive line, when a miss move from Liam Brown puts Johnny Orr through a gap. Caught on the opposition’s twenty-two, a ruck is formed, and Gorgeous  eventually puts Matty Cunningham through under the posts. Converted by Gorgeous.

- Kicking Update -

In the remaining minutes Sefton has the chance to score again when Liam Brown gets the ball in his hands. A two man overlap on the outside, and he decides to kick it. The ball goes straight into the hands of the defender, and they are able to clear their line.

The game ends with another disagreement, where Big Joe is punched on the floor. We were unsure as to who did it, but there was reports it was the small winger. As expected Liam Brown, and Tom Rainey get involved, and someone hit Mark Dobie's fist with their face. With this the ref decided both teams had enjoyed enough fun, and blew for the end of the game.

Another faultless performance from the second team, won through hard work.  Man of the Match went to Liam Brown, despite his kicking.

Yours, Lanky.
